ROMANCE OF AVALOR
By the riverside of a stream
that carries its waters to the sea,
goes the sorrowful one from Avalor,
unsure if he will ever return.
The waters carry away his joy;
he carries his sorrow within.
He goes alone, without company,
having left his loved ones behind,
for one who finds no rest
finds solace only in walking.
He watched where the boat drifted
as the sun began to set;
as the sun sank lower,
the air grew darker;
all became somber
for those who were left behind.
The rowers raised their oars
and to the rhythm of their rowing
began to sing this song:
"How cold the waters are!
Who will dare to cross them?"
From other boats came the reply:
"Those who truly know love,
and those who have placed their will
where it can never be removed."
Behind the boat, his eyes lingered
as long as daylight allowed.
Not for long, for joy
cannot endure for long.
Seeing the sun set against him,
his tears began to fall;
he loosened his horse's reins,
and from the riverbank he rode on.
The night was silent,
amplifying his grief,
for the rhythm of the oars
matched the cadence of his sighs.
To recount his sorrows
would be like counting grains of sand.
The farther the boat drifted,
the farther its sound echoed.
From his ears to his eyes,
his sadness grew equal.
Still astride his horse,
he entered the water.
And with a heavy sigh,
he heard a voice far off:
"Where sorrows take the soul,
they will also take the body."
Yet as fate would have it,
he came upon a boat in the water,
tied to the shore,
its owner away in merriment.
Without dismounting, he leaped in
and cut the rope.
The current and the tide
conspired to aid him.
Nothing more is known of him,
no news could be found.
It is suspected he perished,
but it cannot be confirmed,
for fortune would not have embarked him
only to let him perish.
But the waters of the sea
are not to be trusted.
