I think traffic jam is one of the biggest sufferings of people's life. But it has become an integral part of modern city life. Especially in the big cities of our country, this problem has taken a terrible shape. Every day millions of people lose time, money and peace of mind by getting stuck in traffic to go to work, educational institutions or other destinations. Due to this, the country's economy, environment and the quality of life of the citizens are being seriously affected. It is increasing day by day.
One of the main causes of traffic jams I consider is unplanned urbanization. The road system is inadequate for the growing population in the cities. The road is narrow and inadequate and cannot bear the pressure of the vehicles. Added to this is the extreme mismanagement of public transport. As there are not enough buses, trains or metrorails, people are becoming dependent on private cars. As a result, the number of vehicles is increasing rapidly, which is causing traffic jams on narrow roads.
Moreover, another major reason is the indifference of drivers towards obeying traffic laws. Many drivers ignore traffic signals and drive, which further complicates the traffic situation. Again, many drivers are driving on the roads day after day without a traffic license. Illegal roadside parking and sidewalk encroachment are also adding to the problem. Inadvertent movement of pedestrians, setting up of shops in the middle of the road and road closure for construction are some other major causes of traffic jams.
The impact of traffic jams is multifaceted and profound. It wastes people's time, which affects other areas of life. A working man has to be stuck in traffic for several hours every day, thereby reducing his productivity. Students also reach school late, which disrupts their studies. Economically this is a major loss as fuel is burnt in traffic, transport costs increase and the overall productivity of the country decreases.
In addition, the harmful effects of traffic jams on the environment are severe. Carbon dioxide and other toxic gases emitted from vehicles stuck in traffic are increasing the level of air pollution. Such pollution adversely affects public health. Pollution caused by traffic jams is blamed for breathing problems, heart disease and other physical problems. But people are unaware about it.
It is very important to take proper planning and initiative for the solution. Firstly, the road infrastructure needs to be improved. Construction of wide roads and system of multi-storey roads may be introduced depending on the situation. Development of public transport system and expansion of metrorail, train, bus services will help reduce the tendency of citizens to use private cars. Traffic laws should be strictly enforced and drivers should be properly trained.
Introducing a digital traffic system can also be an effective solution. Traffic jams can be greatly reduced if the movement of vehicles is controlled using modern technology. Ensuring footpaths for pedestrians and eviction of illegal structures along roads is also very important. But I think public awareness is the most important thing here.
Finally I would say that traffic jam is a complex problem but it can be solved with proper initiatives and collective efforts. Through the conscious participation of the people with the government, we can build a traffic-free, healthy and beautiful city. Everyone has to play a responsible role to get rid of this suffering of traffic jam.
