I don’t know how many of us have seen “the banker”, seriously I recommend that movie to every purpose driven young person, especially those in Africa, whether you’re into business, entrepreneurship or not.

But before then, today I’ll want to share few lessons I got from the movie:

  1. To the Parents, you are the number one fan to your kids! How you treat their ideas and opinions means a lot. Never overlook the innovative ideas or questions borne out of curiosity asked by your kids. Don’t stop them from trying to do repairs, or little constructions or gain more knowledge, you never can tell where it’ll all lead to. Be like Garrett senior and always support your kids. Of course in things that are edifying!

  2. Dear young person, never you kill that passion! Rather learn through the process! Bernard Garrett started off as a shoe shiner but had the passion to be a banker. All through the journey before he bought his first bank, he never related that dream, he kept it alive!

  3. Dear young person, start somewhere! I know we’ve seen this being said several times, but let me still reiterate it. Bernard started from venturing into real estate immediately he came to Los Angeles. He started with squatting with his in-laws. He started with the little he had available! This idea of skyrocketing even from start is killing, it only works for few, now go check that few and know how they’re faring currently!

  4. To the young men, find a woman who can root for you just like Eunice! I was discussing this movie with a friend and she was telling me how she was so in love with the role Eunice played in the movie. I wonder how Bernard’s story would’ve been if he didn’t have Eunice in his life. I don’t care if your lady is a slay queen, got some Master’s degree from a Queen’s university, comes from a wealthy background, got many connections, etc., if she doesn’t support you then you ain’t going anywhere far with her! Remember it was Eunice who connected Joe Morris to Bernard. Let me also add this, dear young man, give her a reason to support you, make her see something in you that will make her stick to you even when other think she’s crazy!

  5. Dear young person, always document every transaction, deal or contract! Don’t even say later, draft the agreement and conditions attached and have both parties sign with witnesses. If possible, get a lawyer to be there! Don’t let what happened to Bernard when Barker died happen to you, you might not be able to take the shock!

  6. Dear aspiring leader, find loyalty, even if it’s at the expense of competency! Yeah, you heard me right! Take a look at the past Nigerian government with the present one. The former had many competent but disloyal people around while the latter has loyal people around not caring if they’re competent or not! Bernard took Matt Steiner in even though he was incompetent, he brushed him up and used him get what he wanted. And even when Matt’s wife and the Senator tried to test his loyalty, Matt found a way to prove his loyalty to Bernard. Choose loyalty, then competence, e get why!

  7. Finally, in getting partners, always find people who have your interest at heart like Joe Morris and Patrick Barker. Pray for siblings like Tony Jackson. Find employees like Matt Steiner. Get lawyers like Donald. And finally, when it is time to lead a revolution and make some changes, NEVER YOU LOOK BACK OR BE TALKED DOWN!

Till I write you again.
And in case you wondered, yeah, movies are great muses to me!
Thank you for reading through.
