Four-time Olympic gold medalist Mo Farah's hopes of ending his career at the Tokyo Olympics were dashed when he failed to reach Birmingham's 10,000m qualifier on Saturday. The 38-year-old finished eighth at the European Cup, behind England's Mark Scott, who he doubled as England's Olympic experience. Farah's time in her first race at this distance in four years was less than 22 seconds from the time it took 27 minutes 28 seconds to qualify for the Olympics, which kick off on July 23.

He blamed a foot injury for his poor form, which has kept him out of training for the past two weeks.

"I'm a four-time Olympic champion, but that doesn't mean anything. You have to go out every race and mix it with the best and give yourself a chance," said Farah.

"I've been wearing nettle since I came back from training. It's frustrating because I did such a great job in Flagstaff, Arizona. If you had asked me two weeks ago, it would have been very different. It's part of the sport."

"It just came out of nowhere. I treated it and then I came back, it was really turbulent. Honestly, it was the first thing I did on track in the last two weeks. It wasn't perfect."

He has three weeks left to determine qualifying time and could also focus on the 5,000 meters where he won gold in London 2012 and Rio 2016.
