I started my walk in the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water, often referred to as the 'Venice of the Cotswolds' due to the lovely river that flows through its centre. The stone bridges and quaint little shops made it feel like stepping into a postcard. I stopped by a small tea shop and enjoyed a traditional scone with clotted cream and jam—absolutely delicious!
As I continued my trek, I ventured along the River Windrush, where I saw various wildlife. There were swans gliding gracefully on the water, and I even spotted a heron fishing quietly by the riverbank. The sound of rustling leaves and the gentle flow of the river created a serene atmosphere that was truly captivating.
Along the way, I met a retired couple who were out for a stroll. They shared stories of their past travels around the Cotswolds and gave me some tips on lesser-known paths and hidden gems in the area. One particularly interesting fact I learned from them was about the local wool trade that flourished here during the Middle Ages, which contributed greatly to the beautiful architecture of the villages, with many buildings made from the local honey-colored limestone.
Continuing my walk, I passed through the charming village of Lower Slaughter, where the serenity of the surroundings was enhanced by the sound of a watermill. The old mill, dating back to the 19th century, is a reminder of the area’s agricultural heritage.
