The true meaning of the Halloween celebration?
The eve of October 31 is widely celebrated as Halloween day. An event that turns the neighborhood into a situation that looks like a scene in a horror movie with celebrants dressed like witches, ghosts, vampires, goblins or trolls, werewolves, zombies, skeletons and the devil himself. Anything scary, infact the scarier the better.
The event is also characterized by light candles and carved pumkins, Haunted house, Murder mystery game, Apple bobbing and the popular trick or-treating.
In other parts of the world where Halloween is not celebrated, we have other holydays that celibates the activities and the existence of spirit forces like:
• Obon Festival by Buddhist in Asia
• Samhain celebrated by the Wiccans
• Day of the Dead in Northern America
• Kawsasqanchis by the South Americans
• The Hooded Egunguns by the Yorubas Africa
• Hungry Ghost Festival by the Chinese
🎃 What do you think is the origin of a Halloween party? |
---|
According to Encyclopedia.com Halloween has it's origin deep in the pre pre-Christian Samhain festival which was part of the Celts culture, the people now inhabiting Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Cornwall.
Today, while the Wiccans, pagans, and people of other spiritual traditions. Still celebrate Samhain. The Samhain festival had evolved overtime to what is now known as Halloween. Despite the changes, Samhain, now Halloween still maintains some of its original features.
The Celtic believe that wicked spirits can be appease with sweet stuffs which is the candy used in today's Halloween.
They also had the idea that they could fool bad spirits into thinking that they are spirits too, by putting on a mask to resemble them. The Halloween costume today makes the wearer look like ghosts, vampires, trolls, werewolves or zombies. And carved candlelit pumkins were put on display to repel wicked spirits.
Based on S.E. Schlosser's observation in the americanfolklore.net page, Halloween and all Saints Day was an attempt to "Christianize" pagan festivals of the dead such as Samhain
🎃Do you have any beliefs associated with this “Halloween” celebration? |
---|
I personally feel the pagan should be allowed to practice their religion without having to take it from them or adulterateing it for them.
There should be no mixing of this separate culture, even when the weeds and the wheat are to grow together, the two were not asked to mix. Christians should maintain their own celebrations but if anyone loves none-Christian celebrations, then such should switch over to traditional religion.
🎃 Have you ever had a paranormal experience with this date? |
---|
I don't participate in celebration that honors the dead or ancestral spirits and as such I don't have any personal experience with Halloween.
I will love to call on @udyliciouz @bela90 @samuelnkenta @jozzie90 and @goodybest to participate in this contest
