Is there any difference between promising and swearing? |
---|
A promise and a swear are just brothers in arms, i.e., they go hand in hand together but then there are certain differences just as even identical twin brothers have their differences. Now, what does it mean to make a promise or swear? I'll tell you.
A promise is an action showing that one is committed to someone, i.e., when I promise someone, it is a commitment I'm making to someone. It is just like me saying, "I'll do this for you," or "I'll be there for you." This is just a way of saying I'll follow through on something the person has said.

Whereas, a swear on the other hand is just a stronger version of my promise (the bigger brother among the twins). This is because swearing is usually made in a more serious situation, and one uses stronger words to emphasize their commitment, to which there is a repercussion. It is like I'm saying, "I really, really mean it, and I'll be in trouble if I don't do this."
So yes! there is a difference between promising and swearing where the difference lies in how strong you feel about keeping to your words, with swearing likely coming with repercussions. Then again, promising is usually for a good thing while swearing can either be good or bad. For example, we can promise to help our friends with their homework, and we might swear we'll never eat pizza again, and that if we do, let this or that happen to us.
Is the oath an act that is still considered sacred or in our dissipated present time it no longer has any importance? |

First of all, what is an Oath? An oath is just like swearing, but then it is a super serious promise. It's a declaration where you "swear" to do something or to uphold a certain value. It is made in a formal setting, like in a courtroom or a religious ceremony meaning that we have different types of Oaths, such as;
Legal Oaths: These are oaths we take in accordance with the law, where we swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Religious Oaths: These are oaths we take in our various religious settings, which often involve a supreme being, a deity or sacred text, where we promise to follow religious principles or to uphold a specific vow.
Personal Oaths: These are oaths we make to ourselves or to another person, not necessarily in a formal setting. Where we can promise to achieve a goal, overcome a challenge, or stay true to personal values.
Oaths of Office: These are oaths taken by people entering a position of authority, like a governor, president or judge. Where they swear to uphold the laws and serve the people.
Under Oaths, we've been hearing "swear" but then, I said they are also different. So you might want to ask, how different are they? Well, they are indeed similar but not exactly the same.
An oath is a formal promise, often made in a serious setting like a courtroom or a religious ceremony, with a specific intention such as to tell the truth or to uphold a certain value. Therefore, an oath is a type of swear, but not all swears are oaths.
So back to the question, is the oath an act that is still considered sacred or in our dissipated present time it no longer has any importance?
Well, it is a tough question, because Oaths used to be a big deal as it is a super serious promise we make to something bigger than ourselves, which made people take them really seriously back then.
But in today's world, it seems to be different, even though some people still think oaths are important, like a way of showing we really mean what we are saying. But then, there are those who think oaths are just mere words and are not really worth anything.
Do you consider the oath of love to be a romantic expression or a sentimentality that disguises insecurity? |
---|
For those who may not know, the oath of love is a promise made to a loved one, to love them forever. i.e., it is a declaration of one's commitment to their loved one no matter what happens. It's a way of saying, "I choose you, and I'll always be there for you no matter what." This is also the oath you make at your wedding saying for better, for worse till death do you part.
So, is it a romantic expression or a sentimentality that disguises insecurity? To me, it is the highest form of love, making it a romantic expression. In general, saying "I love you" is a big deal, because some see it as a super romantic thing, like pouring our heart out to express our deepest feelings and commitment.
But then, some people think it is more about seeking reassurance or covering up insecurities, so they just say it to feel better about themselves or to keep the relationship going, even if they are not fully feeling it.
Therefore, I can say that, it can be a mix of both where it is a beautiful expression of love or a shield for personal doubts, depending on the situation and the people involved.
Do you know of any real or fictional case in which the fulfillment of an oath of love led to happiness between two people? |

Every fairytale I've heard off or read in books always ends in "happily ever after" except one, Romeo and Juliet. In Oath of love stories like The Fault in Our Stars (Hazel and Gus's), Me Before You (Louisa and Will), and many more shows characters who make big sacrifices for love, like risking their lives or going against their families, and those sacrifices usually lead to a happily ever after except in the case of Romeo and Juliet, were they swore to love each other even though their families hated each other and that their love led them to tragedy, making it a powerful example of an oath of love.
In my life so far, I have come across tons of stories of people and even witnessed a few who made promises to love each other forever, and they ended up happy together. So yes! I know stories both real and fictional.
I want to take this opportunity to invite @bossj23, @ikwal and @ruthjoe.
