Planting Crops
The plants you are about to harvest, such as vegetables or cut flowers, should be tightly placed on a bed that does not move. The loft bed works great. Grouping reduces the waste of weeds and water and helps you target compost and nutrients. Sufficient space between the rows helps to promote air circulation, thereby eliminating fungal infestation.
Remember, seedlings will not always stay slim, and you do want to limit coverage. It is a good idea to thin the crops according to the nursery's recommendations.
According to Leslie Land, if you want the highest return on organic products in a limited time and space, these plants are usually the winners:
- Uncertain tomatoes:* The reason why they are called this as because the vines continue to grow and produce new fruits until they are frosted.
Non-mixed (old-fashioned) polar beans: Assuming you keep picking, they will continue to grow and produce until frost.
Zucchini: What they said about the avalanche of zucchini is true, especially hybrid varieties.
Swiss chard: You can break the outer leaves for several months, as long as the plant gets enough water, it will be tender every time you pick it.
High peas and sugar pods: They grow easily and produce delicious rewards.
Watering
Source
The best time for watering is usually in the morning. why? The mornings tend to be cooler and less windy, thus reducing the amount of water lost due to evaporation. If the water at night, the plants will stay damp overnight, making them more susceptible to fungal and bacterial diseases.
Ideally, you want to water the roots instead of easily damaged green areas. A drip or soak system can work well, or just water the plant base carefully with your hands.
Most experts recommend watering established plants very little, usually about an inch per week (including rain). Applying the pesticide once or twice a week can promote deeper rooting and thus promote plant growth. To avoid frightening the green plants, try to use water that is at or close to the air temperature; the collected rainwater is the best.
Weeding
No matter where you live, you will still weed. It may sound hard to pull them by hand. Although it can be done, it can also be a good exercise method. It can give you a fresh breath.
Covering with mulch reduces the number of weeds that must be dealt with, which also helps protect the soil. Organic mulch and burlap can work in a pinch. Straw is cheap, but it won’t last long. Wood chips are good, but the price will be high. Many people choose to use lawn pruning, although it should be noted that due to their high nitrogen content, pruning and pruning can only be used for plants that require a lot of nutrients, such as pumpkins and lettuce.
Protecting Plants Without Pesticides
Your garden is full of pests, which may be a sign of other problems, so the first thing you should do is to make sure the plants get enough light, nutrients and water. Also, remember that a diverse garden can help prevent pests by limiting the number of one plant available to the enemy.
Keeping natural carnivores (such as frogs, toads, lizards, birds, and even bats) in your garden is a good thing. Beneficial insects maybe your best friends, especially ladybirds. Many nurseries even sell their canned food, although most likely they will not keep it. Leave a small amount of water to attract friendly carnivores. It is also a good idea to grow plants with small flowers (such as sweet snowballs and dill) to attract predatory insects. You can also use mosquito nets and wire covers.
Organic weapons include Bacillus thuringiensis, a natural bacteria that can disrupt the digestion of caterpillars and other leaf-eating animals. You can also use gardening oil, insecticidal soap, garlic or chili spray.
Harvesting
During peak harvest season, you may find it best to check the garden every day. Are there any herbs? If you use them fresh, select them immediately before you need them. However, if you want to dry and store them, it is best to wait until they bloom, because they will have the greatest flavor. Soon after the dew dries, collect all herbs except basil in the middle of the morning. Harvest basil in the late afternoon because it will last longer after being exposed to the sun for a period of time.
When harvesting green leafy vegetables, they are picked occasionally from the entire crop and a small amount from each plant. For cauliflower, wait until the center head becomes larger before sending the buds to bloom. Cut it off above the leaf node and you may get better yield from the rest of the plant. Generally, it is best to cut off the product with a sharp knife or scissors instead of tearing it with your fingers, which may cause greater damage to the plant tissue.
If the bounty is too much, remember that you can also freeze, store certain types of products in the cellar or pick up cans.
Cleaning Up
You will find diseased plants at the end of the season or year, make sure to pull up the entire organism. Don't forget to rake up underneath, because diseased leaves may haunt people for a long time. Place all infected material deep in the woods, on the ground at least one foot deep, or on a campfire.
In fact, most healthy or expired plants can stay in place in winter. You will provide some food and habitat for birds and other wild animals and plants, and plant mulch can help protect your soil from erosion. It's better to cut down the yearbooks, rather than weed them out. This way, you will keep the soil intact and help prevent weeds from gaining a foothold.
