The last hit of the 90's

With the end of the 2010's on the horizon, and because I've been on a 90's music bender lately, I figured it would be fun to go back and look at a classic song, one that topped the charts for several weeks in 1999. I am, of course, talking about Smooth:

The collaboration between Santana and Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty was an instant hit when it debuted October, 1999. So much so, it stayed at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 from the week of October 23, all the way to the end of the year. Smooth was the longest running chart topper in 1999, even longer than Cher's "Believe," the single of the year!

Smooth stayed at the top for another two weeks in 2000 before finally dropping off the top of the charts. But the song is one of those songs you remember for years. The late 90's were the years of boy bands, Latino vibes, and Britney Spears. Rob Thomas wrote the lyrics for this song, and Santana asked him to sing after seeing what he created. Apparently the song is dedicated Thomas' wife! The things you learn diving through Wikipedia to prep a Steem post...

I gotta admit, I never really was a huge fan of Santana, and I didn't really like Matchbox Twenty, either. Then again, I stayed away from the popular songs of the time because I was pretty much off in my own little world. It wasn't until rather recently that I started listening to this song intentionally, and now I'm kicking myself for passing up such a banger. This song is quintessential 90's in all the right ways. It ended an era, much like we are now. Bring on a new decade!

Excellent post, lovely music, interesting cooperation, resteemed.

A very nice musical write up, and I enjoyed listening to the tune, not sure I heard it back then, but I have now.

If you didn't listen to top 40 stations back then, you probably wouldn't have heard it. But it was EVERYWHERE back then.
