Agustín Barrios Mangoré

Agustín Pío Barrios was born in the Missiones district of southern Paraguay on 5 May 1885, and died on 7 August 1944, in San Salvador, El Salvador. To many, Barrios was the greatest guitarist/composer of all time. A constant traveller until late in his life, Barrios work lay scattered over South and Central America in a small collection of published pieces, 78 RPM recordings, and hand written manuscripts written for the benefit of his patrons and students. In the last four years of his life, however, Barrios took a teaching position at the Declamation and Conservatorium Rafael Olmedo. There, he left a written teaching method containing progressive studies, arpeggios and concert studies, and 10 duos of other composers’ works arranged for him to play in concert with his students, preserved in the handmade copies of the students.
