Growing up the topic "Periods" always got the back bench in classes, homes and even in conversations. Like myths handed down from generation to generations, the truth about periods began to fade with people adding more myths and lies about it. Few women including men knew little or nothing about it.
To the average teen girl it was the red flow that always scared the crap out of us when it came on a school morning. It is still that red flow that scares the hell out of me on lecture days anyway. The little information we had coupled with no internet then was more about "don't touch a guy or you'll get pregnant". There was really no information on the importance of ones period or the details about it other than " it's what makes you a woman".
An average girl or lady can't point to her ovaries except she went to a science class and paid enough attention to the topic "Reproduction". Worst of all are the myths surrounding period cramps and " why would women brag about them" like the other gender would argue.
"You shouldn't say that out loud" one of my male friend once said, to help you understand how taboo it is as a topic, never to be heard of and never to be mentioned.
Hush hush has pushed a lot of ladies to be quiet when they need help regarding their reproductive health. The stigma around the topic is one of the reason many ladies know little or next to nothing about how exactly the menstrual cycle is.
Thanks to technology these days in which all the information is finally on pages but google is still not a doctor no matter how many health sites it has hanging.
Taking away the stigma around periods would be a huge win for the gender and generations to come. One of them including sensitization of young girls right from when they can understand what periods are all about. Reassuring them its nothing to be ashamed of or be scared of. Also, a female counsellor in schools certified to educate girls on their body and all it entails as well as being ready to answer their questions to the best of their ability.
Lets break the cycle of stigma
