Pollution

Pollution can be seen when an amount of any substance or form of energy is released into the environment, much faster than it can be diluted, decomposed, recycled, or stored in some harmless form.
So it is safe to say that the disposal of pollutants (both natural and artificial materials) in our environment in an unsustainable manner, is pollution.

Pollutants refers to substances or energy forms that are introduced into the environment, and they have an adverse effect that affects the usefulness of resources.

3 forms of environmental pollution exist; Air Pollution, Water Pollution, and Land Pollution. Also, pollution could be as a result of excessive human activities that causes harm to the environment such as sound pollution, light pollution, and some specific pollutants like plastic or radioactive materials.

Pollution of all kinds can have harmful effects on the environment, wildlife and most often affects our health.

Types Of Pollution

• Air pollution:
  99% of the air we breathe is made up of Oxygen, Nitrogen, Water vapour and Inert gases. As such, the introduction of assorted elements into air brings about air pollution.

  Thee most common example of such activity is the release of particles into the air via fuel burning (combustion activities). These soot-like particles float in air and leads to air pollution.
  Air pollution is the primary cause of climate change via a process called the greenhouse effect. Heat released from combustion activities is trapped in the atmosphere, and causes climate change patterns such as a change in sea levels all over the world.
  Air pollution could also be due to the release of harmful gases like Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and chemical vapors, which a subjected to further chemical reactions after entering in atmosphere
  Air pollution can also take the form of greenhouse gases like sulfur oxide or carbon dioxide, and warm the planet via a process called the greenhouse effect.

• Water pollution:
  This happens when harmful chemicals or assorted substances enter the water. Such chemicals and substances include sewage, pesticides and runoff fertilizers from farms, or metals such as lead and mercury.

  The artificial warming of water is called Thermal pollution, and it is harmful. This can be seen when a factory or power plant that uses water to cool off, ends up releasing hot water into the water body. This causes the water body to hold lesser oxygen, which is harmful to the marine life. The sudden change in temperature of the water body could also harm the marine organisms.

• Land pollution:
  Land pollution can be seen when household garbage or industrial wastes are released upon the earth, be it in liquid or solid form, which are harmful to the earth's habitation.

  Hazardous waste is any liquid, solid or sludge waste that are harmful to human health and the environment as a whole. Commonly, industries produces and release hazardous waste from activities such as petroleum refining, pesticide manufacturing, mining, and other chemical productions. Households also release hazardous waste such as paints and solvents, fluorescent lights, aerosol cans, and ammunition.
