Steem Cameroon Contest - International Women's Day (Nigeria)

in hive-195150 •  last year

I saw this contest an hour before the deadline and thought, why not. Saw it as a challenge, either I'm able to write a nice article within one hour, if I am then I've indeed gotten better with my writing and if I can't, then there's more space for improvement.

The contest is hosted on the steem Cameroon community and is on national or international awareness day, see post details here

What do you know about the day and How do you or your country or your organization celebrate the day??

I would be writing on international mothers day for this contest.

International Mother's Day is usually celebrated on the second Sunday of May. It doesn't exactly have a fixed date, more of a dynamic one.

One would wonder why I picked this particular occasion for this publication but honestly, it's come to the point where it feels like we have this celebration 10 times a year. Sometimes, I wake up check my phone and be like "Woah, it's mothers Day? didn't we have one last month"

Makes you wonder what jealousy fathers and men would face on these days because over here in Nigeria, we do not joke about these days. The day is often celebrated by children showering their mothers with gifts, surprises, homemade cards, hugs and kisses, and the like. Many families take this moment to prepare special meals and share moments.

I tell you, this day in a Nigerian home is one of the few days you may actually be able to ask your mum to get you the new PS5 while she's still enveloped in happiness and get a positive reply as a child haha. (call that genius manipulation)

What impact does your community gain during and after the commemoration?

The commemoration of the International Mothers Day celebration in Nigeria often leaves a positive impact on families and communities alike. One would find that it strengthens the bond between families and the community, It also helps to inspire acts of kindness not only towards one's mother but toward every other maternal figure in the community, grandmothers, aunts, elders, caregivers, etc.

This feeling of appreciation toward women helps to acknowledge the vital role women play in the community and fosters a more compassionate society. It also acts as a catalyst to change as awareness regarding certain issues is raised and the public is educated about these concerns.

What issue or concern will you recommend to be commemorated this week and on what date?

Yes, there is an issue I would recommend to also be commemorated this week, it could be the next day or the next two days after the international women's Day celebration. I would call it the "women inclusivity day" and it would be a day where issues relating to the exclusion of and marginalization of women in societies would be attended to.

The day should exert more focus and attention on spreading awareness and fostering gender equality. It is no news how women especially in the African culture are often given limited access to education and healthcare as well as limited participation in power and in the workforce.

This gender inequality issue is felt in almost every part of society and I feel there should be a day dedicated just to this cause, away from all the celebrations of women as international women's day entails. This day should focus only on more pressing issues relating to the female gender, on raising awareness about marginalization, and on championing women's rights in society.

International Mother's Day is a day celebrated all over the world and it doesn't just happen to be a day of appreciation but also a day of celebration. On this day, women who have made major breakthroughs and excelled in their field despite all the hardship leveled at them are also celebrated nationally and commended for paving the way for the women's gender.
