Good day my lovely steem members, I hope all is good at your end? Stay with me as I gist you how my day at the farm today went.
Yesterday which was Saturday in Akwa Ibom State was a compulsory sanitation day which means everyone is supposed to cleanup their environment, streets, gutters and surroundings. As such, I took that opportunity to work on my little garden by the veranda of our compound.
I started off by clearing the ground, picking up the sticks and dead leaves that were lying aimlessly on the ground and pushing them to one spot so I could burn them later. Next, I took a bold step, went to my neighbor's compound and borrowed shovel from them because the only farm tool I had was matchet and hoe. Afterwards, I called my brother to teal the ground with the shovel so as to make it soft for the crops I wanted to plant. Do not laugh at me 😂 for not being able to teal the ground myself.
Three days ago, I shade-dried my vegetable seeds against yesterday's planting and they were ready for use. Using my hoe, I digged a not-too big hole on the ground and inserted three seeds only into each hole and proceeded to cover the holes up with enough amount of sand. To put a mark on the places I have planted something, I used this stick as a mark so people will not step on that particular place or try to plant something else there.
This is how we do it in my village and everybody is aware of this practice.
Vegetable seeds were not the only thing I planted. I also planted wateryam. This is one tuber crop I love because it can be used to prepare different kind of local dishes that are so palatable in the taste bud, example; ekpang nkukwo, a local dish made with wateryam tuber and cocoyam.
Finally, I didn't only plant my dear friends, I was also blessed with bountiful harvest of wateryams I planted last year. The harvest were so big that it will be used to prepare a sumptuous meal for my family.
Thank you very much for staying with me till the end of this writeup. I am glad I could share my day with this family.
