But what does success actually mean? Do I need to be as rich as Bill Gates to be considered successful? Do I need to be as influential as Elon Musk to be called successful? Do I need to be as famous as Dwayne Johnson to be successful? Do I need to be martyred for a cause like Jesus or Martin Luther king Jr to be considered successful? I have been pondering on all these questions for some days now, and I came to realize some few things:
Firstly, I strongly believe God created us for a purpose. Therefore, we should consider ourselves successful only if we have fulfilled that mission or we are actively working towards its fulfillment. It would be such a boring life to just be born, educated, find a job, marry and have kids, raise this kids, retire from our jobs and then die. Don't get me wrong, all the activities listed above are important, but don't you ever feel you were made for much more? We were made to serve humanity with our gifts, skills and talents. Today we read about people like Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, Rick Warren, Robert Kiyosaki just to name a few. We see the things these people have been able to accomplish and we are marvelled. We look up to them as role models. They were able to accomplish these things because they chose to follow purpose. They refused being average. They dared to take risks and thread paths unknown. Find purpose today, and trust me, you'll be right on your way to becoming successful.
The second thing I realized is that it takes more than money and fame to be successful. What if I was a billionaire, but I was an abusive father and a drug addict? Would you consider me successful? Of course not. We all know stories of millionaires, singers and movie stars who had all the fame and money, only to be brought down by scandals at the end of their lives. Recently I was reading about singer R. Kelly and his legal troubles. The point I'm trying to make is, it also takes discipline to be successful. Your ability to focus on a task consistently will ultimately determine success. Stay true to your mission.
Being Truly Successful Is More Than One's Self. As I already mentioned in the first point, we need to serve others with our skills gifts and talents. Have you ever wondered why rich people do charity? Have you ever wondered why Many authors didn't just keep their knowledge to themselves but went ahead to write books? Have you ever wondered why even the great commission given by Jesus Christ involves going out and bringing others into God's Kingdom? The reason is simple. Success is always about serving others. It is never about an individual. There are lives to be impacted and transformed with the gifts, skills and talents which we have. Will you get to work today, chasing purpose, or you will continue chasing your ambitions?
The choice is yours, but remember that true success is always beyond one's self.
"You Have Never Really Lived Until You Have Done Something For Someone Who Can Never Repay You." _ John Bunyan
