Mrs. Gloria and other teachers from the guidance and counseling unit forced us into the school hall for seminars one faithful afternoon. I looked for somewhere at the back to sit and relax, as the seminar was not important to me. However, it was just a time to make noise, play with my friends, or just settle down and sleep.

This particular seminar was different. The organisers had a good public address system, projector and even entertaining soft tunes. The settings captivated my interest and I ditched my regular routine and paid attention. Getting to the end of the seminar, I expected the usual long and boring speech, it was another shock. An undergraduate law student rose and shared a striking story of his experience in school.

All I remember is that he took 92nd position out of 100 students in JSS3 B at St. Mary's Science College. But after applying the A-Z of academic success and reading a book written by Dr. Okoro, he rose to the 9th position in his class.

He explained how he was demoted from JSS3 B class to JSS3 class E. JSS3 A & B classes were reserved for serious students, while students in JSS3 C - E were regarded as second-class students. It was not fair, but he broke through. At the end of the academic session, he received two prizes: best student in Science Health and surprisingly, English Language.

His new habit and culture of reading his books helped him a lot, that gave him the boldness and courage to register for, and wrote West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) when he was in SS2 and passed with 7As and 2Cs. One of the best results in his academic session.

He was admitted into University of Uyo, Nigeria, to study law. Alex, the despised student, now had his friends seeking to have his mobile number and his parents began to boast about him everywhere. "He had my attention, and for the first time, I listened carefully to a seminar", said Miss. Ekemini Akpabio.

Interesting life story, I like the determination he had because even after reading the book, two things is involved is either you let it go or you practice what you read.

He was determined to be successful and there he is and even advising others.

In deed academic need determination, looking forward to 2nd series
