As I mentioned in my last post, and for the good of the number of followers now. I have decided to start doing a step-by-step tutorial in my field of Biology. Then I will help have a good understanding of the subject matter. Stay tuned, it's time to learn.
Some Concepts in Biology
Biology is the main branch of science that studies the behavior relationship of living and non-living things, which means studying their structure, chemical processes, physiological mechanism, molecular interaction, development, and evolution. A person who has dedicated their time and energy to studying biology is called a biologist. Biologists have come to accept that:
Cell: The basic unit of life
Gene: The basic unit of heredity
Evolution: The basis of the creation and extinction of species
Branches of Biology
Biology is divided into three major branches:
- Botany
Zoology is the scientific study of animals, and it is the largest field of biology. We have Zoo(animals) and ology(studies) from the term Zoology, which summarize the whole branch.source
- Zoology
Botany is the scientific study of the plant's life, anatomy, physiology, and environmental factors. It covers the whole life cycle of plants such as growth, reproductions, metabolisms, chemical properties of plants, etc.source
- Microbiology
Microbiology is the study of tiny living things and organisms. Micro means tiny things, which we cant see with the naked eyes.source
To learn more about the branches of biology, you can get back to my previous post. Biology - Branches of Biology
Biological Terminologies
- Sciences
Science is the systematic study of living and non-living, putting into consideration physical and natural behavior through observations and experiments.
- Life
Life is a state of existence of animals, plants, and microorganisms from inorganic matter like rocks, water, stones, etc.
- Living things/organisms
Living organisms(animals, plants, and microorganisms) display the key characteristics of life.
- Non-living things/organisms
Non-living things(water, rock, stones, etc) don't display any key characteristics of life.
Characteristics of Living things
Growth: The ability to increase in physical size in the upward direction(animals and plants)
Feeding: The ability to obtain the necessary nutrients for health and growth
Movement: The ability to change direction and physical location
Reproduction: The ability to produce new individuals of their kind
Excretion: The ability to remove metabolic waste from the body ( urea, ammonia, carbon dioxide, water/sweat, etc.)
Sensitivity: The ability to respond to a stimulus or touch.
Respiration: The ability to break down food substances to release energy.
Importance of studying Biology
- To help understand our environment and better way to conserve it
- To help improve our health and understanding of various diseases
- To help us gain knowledge and understanding of so call magical beliefs, superstitions, and traditional taboos
- To help know the different organisms with their behaviors
- To help understand the classification of living organisms
- To help us better understand ourselves as living things
Relationships between the study of biology and other related fields
There are a good number of related fields to the biological sciences, some of the fields are Agriculture, Forestry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Nutrition, etc.
- Agriculture
Agriculture is the practice of farming, using the soil to grow crops and rearing animals for food, wool, etc. Agriculture makes use of the study of biology to improve the breeding of plants and animals.
- Forestry
Forestry is the practice of planting and managing the forest for benefits to the ecosystem. Forest is a large surface area of land covered with trees, which the study of biology will help in controlling the tree pests. Biology can help in tree regulation for better climates, soil, and water for plants and animals.
I will end here, and I will be happy if you can look into Medicine, Pharmacy, Nutrition, and any other field. Drop a comment on how the field is related to biology.
