Speakers who have mastered the art of incorporating humor into their presentations leave a lasting impression and impact on any audience. Let's explore some facts about jokes in effective communication. Let's go!

  1. The aim isn't just to tell a joke, but to ease the tension in the room and make your audience feel relaxed and when your audience is relaxed you are relaxed. Humor, when used properly, puts the audience in a receptive state of mind where the desired impact of the presentation is achieved.

  2. As a speaker, all the jokes you tell should shed more light on your core message.

  3. Jokes that are out of context can introduce awkwardness because they confuse and annoy any audience.

  4. Timing is crucial when it comes to humor in public speaking. A well-timed joke can be a great booster for both the speaker and the audience, but a poorly timed joke, no matter how funny, can bring discomfort. In some cases, when jokes aren't well-received, the awkwardness can play negatively on the speaker's confidence and further make the situation worse.

  5. Jokes shouldn't be self-deprecating unless you're confident enough to avoid sounding like you're demeaning yourself.

  6. Jokes are used to kindle or rekindle interest. A well-placed joke is a great way to keep your audience captivated, especially from the beginning of the presentation.

  7. Humor is also important for emphasis.

  8. Remember, you're not a comedian but a speaker, so the goal isn't to get the audience laughing too hard. Excessive laughter can distract the audience and lead to side conversations.

  9. It's not the originality of the joke that counts, but the way you tell it. A familiar joke can still be effective if delivered naturally and humorously.

  10. The best jokes are those that come naturally. Don't force it, as this can lead to awkward silences.

  11. A good joke always has an element of truth in it.

By mastering the art of humor, you can make even the most serious presentations memorable and impactful.

We'll leave it here for today!
