Kom ,s Matrilineal system is traced right from Babessi where Mini ,the then fon of kom asked his sister Nandong to lead the rest of the kom people out of Babessi to the promise land. Nandong did and she had a daughter named Nakinti . Nakinti bore another female called BO.

Bo Jinabo and Nange Bo. Jinabo became kom,s first ruler in Laikom,as the great grandson of Nandong and Mini,s great grand nephew therefore his successor.
When Jinabo got missing,Kumambong NangeBo succeded him as his nephew because Nange was Jinabo,s sister.

In the Kom Matrilineal system of succession,a brother,takes over a brother,a cousin takes over a cousin,but a nephew succeeds an uncle. Every kom son is a potential successor to his uncle. This process occurs when all the uncles or last uncle of the family has perished. The choosen nephew takes over,with the children of the deceased having a big role to play during this ceremony.This is because they already know their father,s successor right from birth. They are the ones to hand their father,s cup to his nephew ,which is a sigh of authority as their new father.

Kom also has patrilineal succession . This was because,the founders of some compounds in kom were non kom who for one reason or the other ,settled in kom. Therefore,after their demise,their compounds had to be handed to their sons. Examples of these compounds are "Abae Anjang" Abae Aboh" Abae A Nantang Juambom etc.

Kom,s succession system should be viewed the way it is ,not the way we think it is supposed to be.
