Greetings to all my friends in steemit. We are already into the dry season which is characterized by intense heat and dry conditions. Within this period most of the farmers engage a lot on farm preparations in anticipation for the rainy period. The activities within this season include clearing of farm lands, weeding of farm lands, placing of Ankara and as well harvesting of dry season crops like dry season beans, cassava and sweet yams.

Poor farming systems

The clearing and weeding within this period is mostly done within the early hours of the morning and evening when the sun have lower it heats. This is also because the grass is wet and easy to work on. Working within the day when the sun is high is accompanied by dust and harsh solar conditions which are not good for a farmer. This activity is most seen within the western highlands of bamenda. When going to the farms farmers usually go along with enough water to drink, Palm for those that have access to and some other food stuffs but some at times go with matches to light fire and roast food like cassava and sweet potatoes to eat since this is always it’s season.

Most of the harvesting is done within this period. The yams, cassava and sweet potatoes are good example. These crops need to be harvested because if left un-harvested it may get bad of shifted to another period. When these items are harvested, new Ankara’s are arrange in preparation of the rains. This is one of the highest period with bush fires and slice and burnt. It’s always convenient to prepare you land for planting but now.

Soil preparation by the young generation

Tilling of the soil is the last activity within this dry season period. When the grasses are cleared and Ankara arrange then the tilling is done to make the farm ready for planting. This is done with local hoes. Anywhere around bamenda now is characterized with such activities mention above. When ever we are eating let’s try too to assist farmers because it’s not easy just to see food as we do in the market. It’s their handwork and all I can say is long live farmers.

Long live farmers. Thanks you so much for pointing out these important aspects of the dry season .Burning the grass and soil is not completely bad ,as it helps our Fanny's make healthy potatoes and yams that same year. but in a short run it depletes the entire area making it infertile. Thanks for sharing buddy.

I've always loved farm practice and how well farmers are organized. It shows you have a good mastery of your field.
Now lemme ask who brought that kid to the farm, until he's working and removing tongue 😂😂😂

Ha hahah with with hard times in our country it’s time to train our little ones hand skills so that when after University they will become ambassador of environment and agriculture not just mare words

Haha that's amazing then. I love that

Agriculture never fails and it's a good thing to involve the younger generation in farming. They can start learning the art of hardwork
