After completing the Advanced Levels, many students face significant frustration during the transition to university. Unlike secondary school, where students move from one class to the next with relative ease, university life introduces a level of pressure and complexity that can be overwhelming. With high expectations for success, students often find themselves struggling to choose the right department. This can lead to selecting fields they are not passionate about or that may not offer promising job prospects in Cameroon.
The disappointment can be worst when even after choosing a seemingly appropriate course, graduates face unemployment due to a lack of available jobs or because opportunities are reserved for a select few. Itβs disheartening to see many Advanced-Level holders, who are celebrated during graduation ceremonies with awards and accolades, end up frustrated and disillusioned.
Furthermore, secondary school students often have plans or rely on support from relatives abroad, which may not always materialize. For instance, after receiving my Advanced-Level results, I initially intended to study translation. However, concerns about the economic viability of this field in Cameroon led me to consider studying in Nigeria. After reconsidering the economic situation in Nigeria and other options like banking, finance, or nursing, I find myself, like many others, struggling to navigate these complex decisions.
Ultimately, the journey from high school to university and beyond can be filled with challenges and uncertainties. Addressing these issues requires better guidance, support, and opportunities to help Advanced-Level holders make informed choices and achieve their career goals, i hope that in years to come we have better guardian support but for now I hope I take the best decision
