Powering up is investing in Steem and increasing your Steemit investment, increases your rewards on the blockchain. However, there's one other important aspect associated with powering up. When steemians power up, they build their SP hence are able to reward other steemians with juicy upvotes thereby giving back and more to the Steemit community. This implies, the higher your SP, the higher you are able to support other steemians to grow on the blockchain and it's very fulfilling to know that by growing on the blockchain, you are helping others to grow.
