On Wednesday, 28th August 2024, The Greens, Bright Light Project, and ASDEPCO joined forces to tackle plastic pollution in the Mulang wetlands. This initiative focused on environmental conservation and the implementation of effective plastic waste disposal methods. During this impactful work session, various talks were given on how to completely eliminate plastic pollution in our community. The discussions emphasized the strategic importance of managing plastic waste and raising public awareness about its detrimental effects.
With the collaborative efforts of The Greens, Bright Light Project, ASDEPCO, and our interns—Bunila Berinyuy Shalin, Caroline Emma, and Kelly—we successfully recovered over 1,000 plastic bottles from the river. However, it is estimated that there are still over 1 million plastic bottles scattered across the entire Mulang wetland in the Bamenda city area.
These recovered plastics were taken to our site, where Nsangou Rudolf and I provided training to our interns on transforming waste plastics into UPB (Upcycled Plastic Bottle) tree nursery pots. This initiative was a great success, resulting in the production of 122 nursery pots from the collected plastics.
