Finlay is a student of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland under the tutelage of Allan Neave and of the University of the Arts, Berlin with Marco Tamayo. He first started playing the classical guitar at Portobello Music School, and during these early years won the Mary Moore Medal and performed in the Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh. Finlay went on to study at the Yehudi Menuhin School with Laura Snowden and Richard Wright on a scholarship from the Rolling Stones. After being awarded a Eurostrings Scholarship in 2019, Finlay went on to place 3rdin the Altamira International Guitar Competition, and as a scholar of the Cantilena Ensemble, he performed his concerto debut alongside Allan Neave and members of the Scottish Opera. Finlay is a founding member of both the Taproot Ensemble and the Malamatina Quartet, which, after playing at the UN’s 2021 Climate Conference, was awarded a residency at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He has performed internationally in venues such as Mansion House (England), Fromista Cathedral (Spain), Bilkent University (Turkey) and the Franz-Liszt Hochschüle (Germany), often alongside his duo partner Hattie McGregor. Finlay plays on a 2016 Angelo Vailati guitar and on a Miodrag Zerdoner romantic guitar with the generous support of a local donor.
