Yes you read the title correctly, a huge meal of rocks, minerals, & lava glass - ripe for the eating!
Before the whole world shut down, we were making plans and taking progressive steps to sign up for and vend at local gem and mineral shows around the Portland area. We figured there is no better place to distribute gems than at actual gem shows... pretty good idea I would say.
We visited several local gem shows after returning to Oregon form the World Gem Show in Quartzsite and Tucson, Arizona this year. While most of them were fairly small with minimal variety, there was one show in particular that had a display I just could not ignore.
The Oregon Agate and Mineral Society Show held at OMSI in downtown Portland had many fabulous exhibits, and a HUGE selection of delicious looking food laid out for the guests... or so we thought.

As we approached the table with all the food, I had to look very closely to realize that it was not food at all, but instead a carefully selected collection of all different kinds of rocks, minerals, fossilized wood, and volcanic glass made to imitate the appearance of different kinds of food. The nice lady who curated this collection is named Donna Ernst - a member of the Oregon Agate and Mineral Society, the group that hosts this OMSI event we attended among many others. She seems to thoroughly enjoy displaying this "rock-food" smorgasbord, especially when she sees how much interest people have in it and how much joy it brings the kids who come across it.
Please enjoy the following video of Ernst's "rock-food" collection, which includes her telling of many details and stories about all the elements displayed on her table, which she proudly protects. Running into this project was a pleasantly unique, one of a kind experience.
