There are a few different ways to look at food security - in the city, outside of the city, maybe at a global scale, or diversity or availability. But it all starts with food, what we eat, how we eat, when we eat, but above all - IF we eat. Food security is our biggest issue. It is an existential threat to all our lives, right now, in 2020. Our food is missing critical nutrients, it lacks diversity, and it travels great distances, inflicting a toll on our environment, our wallets, and our bodies. Without good, nutrient-dense, locally and organically grown food, we cannot thrive.

Food security means access to, and availability of, nutritious food. The opposite, food insecurity, means you don't really know how many more meals you can safely assume to still look forward to. Not being sure IF you will have a breakfast tomorrow, or more than one meal thru the day. Food insecurity means sending your children to school without breakfast, hoping the school will feed them. This is daily reality for so many people in Ontario.

Worrying about food makes it impossible to focus on school, harder to form social bonds, and difficult to grow into a better human being. Food insecurity is costing humanity in generations of people's ability to progress. Loss of knowledge, and changes in society over the past century-ish, have us at a disadvantage these days. There are too many mono-crop fields, too much processing of food, not enough teaching about nutrition, and overall ignorance of science in all those matters.

Abundance is the obvious solution to food insecurity. Food needs to become a part of our civic duty. It needs to be encouraged, supported, and shared by everyone. There are many ways, and reasons, how and why, this is a pillar of our existence as a society. Cultivating our soil, nourishing the land, is good for both humans and the planet.

Considering the impact it has on climate, our immediate environment, and that we have about 50 years of good soil left to be able to grow any food, we need to act to make a change.
