From https://www.rojodojo.com A preview of my Bujinkan video exploring 手解 Tehodoki with 片手内回 Katate Uchi Mawashi and 片手外回 Katate Soto Mawashi. The first kanji in tehodki means “hand”. The second comes from 解ける hodokeru which means to to come untied, to come apart, or unravel. But we normally translate tehodoki as wrist escapes.

There are many variations on these kihon. I began with the elbow grab. Spinning one way or the other creates the release that turns into a strike.

If the grab is at the wrist, you may spin your whole body one way or the other. For uchi mawashi, we move palm down and lever of the elbow. For soto mawashi, the motion is palm up like holding a drink tray. Against a cross grab this is reversed.

When hatsumi Sensei teaches tehodoki, he doesn’t normally go for a clean break. He normally teaches the concept of 繋がり tsunagari, or connection. The attacker has trapped himself to you with his grab. So we seek to maintain and control using this connection.

In this way, you can guide the attack. You let the attacker have what he wants, while at the same time guiding him to a place where you can win. Many henka can appear in this place.

I finished with some weapon control. Your opponent thinks he is controlling your weapon, but you have led him to that trap. Then the weapon is turned on him for a type of 挟み捕り hasami dori control. We studied this with 十手 jutte, 短刀 tantō, and 苦無 kunai.
