STORY
Wow, Mt. STOL (eng. chair) over Kobarid .... Mt. Stol in the Julian Alps ...
At sunrise, we drove out of our backyard. Slovenia was lazily waking up, or in other words, because today is a holiday, Prešeren's Day, everyone is still asleep. So we had the magic of the morning sun all to ourselves.
We drove about two and a half hours to the village of Breginj, which is the largest eastern settlement in Slovenia. A small place under the mighty STOL mountain, which was our challenge today. And the challenge was. So to speak 🙂. We parked the car along the forest path, a little out of the village of Breginj. We strapped backpacks on our shoulders and set off along the forest road along the beautiful Bela stream.
Let me mention that we filmed all the way for a YouTube video.
After a few hundred meters we came to the source of the River Bela. Well, really, it's more of a stream than a river. We drank water from a pure spring and headed on.
The ascent has begun. Our first milestone was the Church of St. Margaret. According to mountain signs, it should be within 45 minutes. It took us an hour and a half. When we arrived at the church and when I saw how long it took us, I knew that the ascent to Stol would not take only 2 hours and 45 minutes, as it was written on the mountain signpost. And how right I was 🙂. We got to the top in five hours.
It is true that in the meantime we filmed and dropped a drone into the air, which was adrenaline in itself. I have to say I am proud of Matija for becoming such a good drone pilot 🙂. We had a sandwich, tea, and chocolate at the church. With new energy, we set off and soon reached the upper limit of the forest, where the real ascent had just begun. Otherwise, the ascent was open, so we had a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains, which gave us the energy to ascend, but I admit that mentally and physically we were not ready for what awaited us.
Zigzag, zigzag, zigzag, nice slow step by step. An infinitely long climb. Around us is a beautiful slope of mountain grass, which is a wonderful pasture for mountain goats or ibex. We even saw and admired them in the distance. It must have seemed strange to them what one or two homo sapiens were now panting on this bank. This is easy, a small hill. Yes, for goats it is probably easy because they have four legs 🙂.
Mostly, it was nice to see them in their natural environment. I think we were the only visitors to the mountain that day, so the ibex really have their peace here.
After quite a few serpentines, after another sandwich and my hundredfold cursing and complaining, (I'm exaggerating a bit, the drama must be for the will of a good story) we arrived at the snowy top of the ridge. Here we had a chance to try out our new crampons and how well they worked. They came in handy on the icy snow. I'm very happy to have them because the slip could be very looooong and fatal.
When we arrived at the ridge, the worst part of the route was behind us. A short, gentler ascent separated us even further, to the very top, which we easily overcame and thus won the second peak this year.
At the top, the weather station is located. I wouldn't mind if someone would sell schnapps on top because we fucking deserved it. But nothing so, we only get a stamp.
But the problem was the registration book was there, but not the stamp. For God's sake, Matija lost it. All this effort and no stamp. He started digging snow around the registration book because he hoped to find a stamp somewhere attached to the rocks. But without success.
I encouraged him for a while, but then the wind made me very cold. And because I was afraid that the January inflammation would recur, I asked Matija if we could go. The interesting thing was that the moment he dropped the need for a stamp and accepted that we would survive, even if we didn't have it, at that moment he saw it with the tip of his eye and the joy, I mean, the joy that followed, was indescribable. It paid off to spend five hours on this hill. It was all repaid with a stamp hanging on an iron fence holding the weather station together.
Satisfied and stamped we went home. Alllll thissssss looooong waaaay back. It really dragged on. In the end, we were so tired that we walked like two retirees. Every step was painful. But we succeeded. Just before sunset we arrived at the car, where we changed into fresh and ice-cold clothes, but were extremely happy to be in the car. This car then took us to Tolmin, where we had a veeeery good homemade pizza, with salami and gorgonzola. It was sooo good. Then another two-hour drive home.
It was a long day, but I’m glad we climbed this mountain. Such feats always invigorate me and make me stronger. I can't wait for the next feat.
