Gold-leaf Alabai | Turkmenistan president unveils 6-meter tall statue of a dog

A dog is man’s best friend, but it seems one particular breed is the Turkmen’s pedigree chum.

Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has unveiled a statue to the Alabai – a type of sheepdog beloved of the nation’s people.

While someone suspected of a crime might hope for a cast-iron alibi, Berdymukhamedov gifted his country, ahem, a gold-leaf Alabai – one that’s six meters high and stood upon a nine-meter pedestal housing a video screen. The screen, obviously, shows overwhelmingly cute footage of Alabais.

Berdymukhamedov made a song and dance of the unveiling in the nation’s capital, Ashgabat – literally. The ceremony contained both forms of entertainment, plus an old man handing an Alabai puppy to a young boy – an act most of us are told to be wary of.

The secretive former Soviet state has form with animal tributes. One of its most famous landmarks is a fountain surrounding sculptures of the Akhal-Teke breed of horse.

But there’s no need for animal rivalry. In his book on Alabai, published last year, Berdymukhamedov said the Turkmen’s ancestors had seen ‘in the Akhal-Teke their dreams and in the Alabai their happiness.’

A Statue to honor "Mans-Best-Friend." Here, in the USA, our highly educated, with superior intellect, progressive thinkers, would find a way as to why it must be torn down.

Thanks again for the report, @rt-international. A Gold Statue of "Mans-Best-Friend". That's cool.
