Railways were first introduced in British Raj in 1853. However, the railways were not very popular among the people of India at that time. The main reason for this was because the railways were used mainly for transportation of goods and not for transportation of people. In addition, the railway fares were also very high.

However, things changed with the introduction of the Railways Act of 1871. This act made it mandatory for railway companies to provide a certain percentage of their tickets to be sold at a concessional rate. As a result, the use of railways started to increase among the people of India and it gradually became one of the most popular modes of transportation.
