Lohri is celebrated all across the country but with different names and in different manners. it marks the beginning of the harvest season. this festival is celebrated on the 13th of January on the winter solstice(the longest night of the year)

Lohri in Punjab

Makar-Sankranti-Celebration-in-Jaipur.jpg

It is all about kites and kites and more kites. in Punjab, when a boy is born they celebrate his first Lohri(they gift peanuts, Rewari, popcorn, jaggery, ladoo, etc to show their happiness). Now, we do the same for girls. The first Lohri celebration of a child is like a marriage celebration.

After a full day of kites and DJ music. at night we made a bonfire and gathered around it in circles. people throw popcorns, Rewari, and peanuts in the fire while dancing in the circle.

Why Lohri is my Favorite Festival

The only reason why I like Lohri is that I'm very athletic. I love to run, jump and do physical tasks. I love to collect kites more than I fly them. PATANG LOOTERA (kites thief); when someone's kite is cut out of their thread in my locality there is no one who can stop me from getting that. The kites name in Punjabi are the emotion.

The larger the size the more it's chance to get in my collection. it was like my passion. my friends and neighbors would team up to try to stop me but they always get only ash in their hands. when I was very young, I grew taller than my fellows and that was my advantage. they used to walk out from the ground when I came in.

Current scenario

As I'm 21 now and it doesn't look nice if I go out and collect kites in my street. it's like a passing the torch (to the children) moment for me. I'd tons of happy memories of this festival but it's been 4 years I haven't flown a kite. I'm totally against the Chinese thread(gattu, Chinese manjha). they ruined this precious festival because this thread is dangerous to life and people in Punjab are more into it. so, my Lohri is not the same as before but I do enjoy watching kites in the sky.

I Pray for a bounteous harvest every year
