Hello Everyone
I hope that you all are doing well, enjoying your happy and healthy life. Today, I am going to share another interesting lecture which is about shoulder extension. Shoulder extension shoulder is used for shoulder impingement, impairment, disfunction, injury, unable to move shoulder up. So, you can do this exercise and therapy for strengthen of shoulder muscles.
Shoulder extension
Muscles
Muscles involved in the shoulder extension are
Deltoid (posterior)
Latissimus Doris
Teres major
The posterior deltoid muscle is a strongest extensor over full range with the greatest contribution with the arms below horizontal. It's peak moment arm is 30 degree of flexion.
Grades
Position of patient
Patient should be in prone position with arms at sides and shoulder internally rotated ( palm up).
Instructions to Therapist
Stand at test side. Ask the patient to lift arm as high as possible. If full range is available ( grade 3) position arm in test position near end range and apply appropriate resistance. The one hand is used to give resistance contoured over the posterior arm just above the elbow.
Test
Patient arises arm off the table, keeping the elbow straight.
Instructions to patient
Lift your arm as high as you can. Hold it. Don't let me push it down.
Grading
Grade 5
Holds test position against the maximal resistance.
Grade 4
Holds test position against strong resistance.
Grade 3
Fulfill the available range of motion with no resistance.
Grade 2
Completes partial range of motion.
#8# Grade 1 and 0
Position of patient
Patient should be in prone position with arms at sides and shoulder internally rotated (palm up).
Instructions to Therapist
Stand at test sides. Fingers used for palpation are placed on the posterior area of the upper arm ( posterior deltoid).
Palpation should be done over the posterior shoulder just superior to the axilla for posterior deltoid fibers. Palpate the teres major muscle on the lateral border of the scapula just below the axilla.
Test and instructions to patient
Patient attempts to lift arm from table.
Grade 1
In grade 1 we can the palpable contractile activity in any of the participating muscles but no movement of the shoulder.
Grade 0
No palpable contractile response in participating muscles.
