Health benefits of oranges:
Vitamin C in oranges helps your body in different ways:
- Protects your cells from damage.
- Helps your body make collagen, a protein that heals wounds and gives you smooth skin.
- It absorb iron to fight anemia.
- Increases your immunity, your body's defense against germs.
- Slow progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of vision loss.
- Helps fight cancer-causing free radicals.
- When you feel anxious, vitamin C can lower your stress hormone cortisol and also lower your blood pressure levels.
Some other benefits:
Anti-inflammatory.Some foods tell your immune system that it is under attack. This results in inflammation. When inflammation becomes a long-term problem, it can lead to diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Oranges have the opposite effect.
Fiber. The 3 grams of fiber in a medium orange helps keep your gut healthy, lowers your cholesterol and risk of heart disease and eliminates ulcers. Fiber also slows down your body's sugar absorption system - a big bonus if you have diabetes.
Calcium.Oranges are rich in these important nutrients, which keep your bones, limbs and muscles strong.
Folate for mothers and children. Oranges are a great way to get a large dose of folate naturally. Your body uses it to divide cells. Because it helps prevent birth defects, it is a very important B vitamin for pregnant women.
Good sugar. The 12 grams of sugar in oranges is all natural. This is different from the type of sugar you get at a candy bar. Also, all the fiber, vitamins and antioxidants that come with orange make it a good choice for your body. Choose raw oranges with less sugar than dried oranges.
Potassium. This nutrient lowers your blood pressure, and oranges contain a bunch of it. Citric acid and citrate. These compounds prevent the formation of kidney stones.
Orange health risks:
Sometimes you can get too much of a good thing. Although it mainly applies to supplemental forms, too much vitamin C at a time can give your body more fiber and sugar than it needs.
Beware of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headaches and insomnia. Oranges are high in acid and can worsen the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If you take beta-blockers, too much orange can increase your potassium levels and damage the kidneys.
If your body stores more iron than it needs, a condition called hemochromatosis, high levels of vitamin C can add more iron and damage your tissues. Vitamin C can increase absorption from drugs containing aluminum, such as phosphate binders, and may increase your estrogen levels if you are on hormone replacement therapy.
For orange juice, you can get some extra sugar and lose some fiber off trade. Excess fruit juice can also cause weight gain, which can increase your risk of heart disease, especially in middle age. But whole oranges and their juices are good for you.

- Orange-Earl Gray Iced Tea.
