What is "data leak"
A data breach is when someone gains unauthorized access to information.
Whose fault is the data leak?
There are generally three categories of people who can cause data breaches within an organization.
Random insider
Sometimes data leakage can be accidental. For example, someone worked in an organization and had too much privilege. In this case, the folder or file may come into view by accident or due to unhealthy curiosity. The person had no intention of causing harm, just someone was at the wrong time in the wrong place. In the case of casual insiders, the disclosure poses little threat, but corrective action must still be taken.
Malicious Insider
The situation is similar to the previous one, with the only difference being that this type of insider has unscrupulous thoughts. Alternative option: when the employee had the right level of authority, but the thought of revenge against the current or former employer arose. A malicious insider is the most vexing scenario covered in this article, as someone who was trusted becomes the cause of a deliberate leak. An example would be Edward Snowden. While working for the NSA as a contractor, Snowden had the appropriate level of security clearance, which led to the leaking of highly classified information about controversial government programs.
Malicious agent from outside
A malicious outsider is any attacker who gains unauthorized access to information. A broad group of people with motivations ranging from a bored teenager to a government-sponsored hacker group fall into this category. The consequences of leaks associated with outsiders can be very unpleasant. Recent examples that fall into this category are the attacks on 'Target' and 'Sony'.
