In this lesson we continue to study Chinese radicals that are key components of characters. I constantly repeat to all my students that radicals are building blocks of Chinese Characters that will help you to grasp both meaning and pronunciation of the characters.
As you already know there are many thousands of Chinese Characters. Some of them are more common and some less but radicals will help you to get an idea 💡 if their meaning. If you want to speak Chinese and you have a bit of extra time then invest them in Chinese radicals.

Today we will have look at radical 意。 The positive thing of radicals is that they are characters themselves in many cases so you also learn new characters

This character has following meanings:

• idea
• meaning
• thought
• wish
• desire
• intention
• suggestion
• hint
• trace
• to expect
• to anticipate

Now we will see what happens if we add other radicals to the radical 意。We will get new characters with new meanings but same pronunciation [yì]

#1 Let's take radical grass:

And add to the character 意

薏 - seed of job's tears; lotus seed

#2 Let's take radical heart:

And add to the character 意

憶 - recall; recollect; remember

#3 Let's take radical person and make a new character

By adding to the character 意

億 - hundred million
