Coaching

Whatmore retired from cricket in the 1986-89 season. He then jumped into coaching for the purpose of earning money. He coached the Sri Lankan team for two terms. For the first time he was successful. Under his able management, the team won the 1998 Cricket World Cup. Between the two terms, Lancashire won the 1998 and 1999 National League titles. Also, the club won the NatWest Trophy in 1997.

He was the coach of Bangladesh team from 2003 to 2006. In some cases, Bangladesh was successful against the top team. Bangladesh won their first Test match in early 2005. [3] That same year, Australia lost to the top-ranked team, which took the world of cricket by surprise.
