Cricket is often termed as the 'gentlemen's game'. The sport which originated in England somewhere in the 16th century gradually spread to the British colonies around the globe.
Over the years, the governing bodies of cricket have tried to make it more spectator-friendly, thereby introducing the One Day format and more recently the T20 format. The origin of franchise cricket leagues is not an age old story. It began somewhere after the turn of the century.
My favourite franchise cricket league:
The Indian Premier League is one of the earliest franchise cricket leagues to have been staged. It began under the aegis of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) under the watchful eyes of the ICC (International Cricket Council).
The main motto of the league has been inscribed on the winners trophy which reads 'yatra pratibha avsara prapnotihi' (Sanskrit for 'where talent meets opportunity'). And this has bore fruit as well. Many small town kids have been able to shine on the international arena because the IPL has given them the launchpad to do so.
The motto inscribed on the trophy Source
Since it's inception in 2008, the league has completed 13 successful years and is currently ongoing in its 14th edition. Like any other franchise league, the beauty of the IPL is the diversity of cricketers from different nations and national teammates becoming opponents under different franchises.
Another important aspect of the league is that young Indian cricketers as well as several uncapped foreign players get exposure alongside world-class cricketers and thereby hone their talents. With the ample influx of money in the league, cricketers are also economically benefitted in the long run.
Moreover, the league invites a host of former players as experts and commentators for the matches and share their experiences. This makes the league even more interesting. As a brand, the league has been able to be among the world's most valuable sports programmes, stats reveal.
While many other franchise leagues have developed in the recent times, I feel that the IPL is a superior ball-game in every aspect.
