World of Cricket : Part 01 : Indian Premier League

I am a big cricket fan. So I wanted to bring a article series about cricket. Because even though it is a famous sport some people are not aware about it. I have done a article about basic things to know about cricket in my 4th achievement post. If you want know about the history and the nature of the cricket, you can check that out.

Cricket is extremely popular in South Asian countries. Because of that we are playing many franchise-based cricket tournaments in addition to the international cricket tournaments. There are many franchise-based cricket leagues in the world. These leagues mainly based on T20 format. Here are some franchise-based cricket leagues that based in T20 format.

Out of these these leagues, this article is going to be about Indian Premier League (IPL). I know every cricket fan is very fascinated about IPL. Because this is the biggest franchise-based cricket league in the world.

What is IPL?

Indian Premier league is a professional T20 cricket tournament based in India. First edition of this league held in 2008. This tournament has been held every year since then. This league was founded by Board of Control for Cricket in Indian (BCCI).

There are 8 teams playing for this league. These eight teams representing eight different cities or States in India. There have been twelve seasons of this so far. Each team plays each other twice in home and away round-robin format in the league phase. Top four teams will qualify for the playoff. Top two team from the league phase will qualify for the quarter finals. Winners from two quarter finals will face each other at the finals.

For some reason, many teams were banned and left from the league. Such as Pune Worriers India, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Deccan Chargers. And in 2015 Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals bannes for two seasons following their role in match-fixing and betting scandal. Two teams that replaced for those two seasons are Rising Pune supergiants and Gujarat lions.

The latest edition is Dream 11 IPL 2020. Venue for this is changed to United Arab Emirates due to the affect of Covid-19. This season is currently happening.

Players for the teams are selected by bidding in this tournament. A large number of local and foreign players are participating in this. Out of these, the best players are selected by the teams' management for a large sum of money. A maximum of eight foreign players can be selected for each team, of which only four players can play in a match. In 2020 each team could spent 850 million indian rupees to buy players through annual auction.
