1999 was a unique milestone year for Bangladesh cricket. After the two neighboring countries, India and Pakistan won the Cricket World Cup, the cricket-crazy people of this country have started to be touched by cricket. Following this, a new country called Bangladesh appeared before the world in the World Cup held in England (along with Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands) in 1999. It was at that World Cup that the new country of cricket informed everyone that they did not just come here to back empty-handed. Everyone remembers the World Cup of 1999 with the story of Bangladesh's win over Pakistan. But that was Bangladesh's second win in the World Cup. The first win came against another World Cup debutant, Scotland. Both teams lost two matches in the group stage before facing each other in Edinburgh, Scotland. Bangladesh lost to New Zealand and West Indies while Scotland lost to Australia and Pakistan. The two teams that came to play the World Cup for the first time wanted to taste their first victory on the stage like the World Cup. So outside of the big team's thrilling matches, this match was another source of excitement.

Scotland won the toss and their captain decided to bowl first. Proving their decision, Khaled Masood returned to zero in the 3rd over with an uncontrolled hook shot over the shoulder with the first slip behind the keeper. After 3 overs, Mehrab Hossain flicked a simple ball on the top of the pad with a wrist twist and was caught by the leading edge. In the next over, Aminul Islam was trapped by LBW. Three wickets for 13 runs on the scoreboard. The situation was so fragile that Bangladesh had to wait until the 9th over to get the first boundary. Naimur Rahman and Minhazul Abedin Nannu did the same thing to protest again the Scottish. Before Naimur Rahman was dismissed, Bangladesh got some air in the much-needed partnership of 69 runs for the 6th wicket. But that did not last long, in the next over Khaled Mahmud returned to the dressing room with a catch for zero runs. Minhazul Abedin was still playing on one side and along with Enamul Haque and Hasibul Islam took the team's score to 184 runs in 50 overs through two important partnerships of 36 runs and 31 runs respectively. In the end, Abedin was unbeaten on 68 off 118 balls with the help of 6 fours. This is the first time Bangladesh has batted a full 50 overs on the World Cup stage.

The target for the win for scotland was 185 runs. But they had to make that run in 1 over reduced to 49 overs. The match referee fined them one over due to the slow over-rate. Even bigger danger came in the second ball of their innings. Hasibul Haque's inswinging yorker crashed into Patterson's pad before he realized it. Then in the fifth over Hasibul Haque hit again. Mike Smith was caught behind Khaled Masood for 1 run and made the scoreboard stand for 2 wickets for 8 runs. Then Stegan and Salmond added 29 runs for the 4th wicket and found some ground under their feet. Scotland's score in 26 overs was 6 wickets for 83 runs. Looking at the scoreboard, it seemed that Bangladesh's victory is now a matter of time. But Scotland's star all-rounder Gavin Hamilton was still on the road to Bangladesh's victory. The score rose from 8 for 83 in 26.3 overs to 6 for 138 in 41.2 overs. Hamilton was playing for 63 off 70 balls. Scotland could have won the match if they had played 5 more overs in the way they were playing. The 3rd ball of the 42nd over was the biggest incident of Scottish cricket to date. Alec Davis's straight drive touched bowler Manjurul Islam's finger and then hit the stamp and Hamilton was then out of the crease. Hamilton returned after suffering the most unfortunate dismissal in cricket. At the same time, Scotland's hopes of victory were matched. After Hamilton's dismissal, they could not return to the match. Scotland was bowled out for 163 in 47.3 overs and Bangladesh picked up their first victory in the World Cup by 22 runs. Minhazul Abedin became Man of the Match due to his outstanding performance.
