Greetings, Coringation travelers!
Last wednesday, September the 11th of 2024, the day that Memphis Depay arrived in São Paulo, Corinthians faced of Juventude in the second leg of their quarter finals dispute in the Copa do Brasil.
After losing away the first game by 2 to 1 goals, in a dramatic game in which the defender Gustavo Henrique scored our only goal in the end of the match, we needed to win for at least one goal to not be disqualified from the Cup; a victory by at least two goals would put us in semis directly, but a difference of only one would take the decision to a penalty shootout. Even though our incredible goalkeeper Hugo Souza has been great in penalty kicks, defending three in a row during the last shootout against Red Bull Bragantino and getting us to the quarter-finals, I continue to despise penalties because of the amount of anxiety it amounts.
The game started fast paced, with Corinthians attacking and generating lots of chances. It finally turned into a goal when Yuri Alberto softened a ball to Talles Magno, who masterfully assisted Angel Romero, that striked strongly into the back of the net.
Juventude then shined a little more, and made two invalid goals through smashing our goalkeeper Hugo, in the end of the first half. The VAR correctly annuled the first one, but in the second, the referees got it wrong, even with the video replays, and validated the mist stupid goal ever, probably. We went to the intermission all tied up 1x1. This result was eliminating the Timão.
In the second quarter, we had to wait until the final fifteen minutes for Rodrigo Garro to mastefully strike from outside the box, after a pass from Fagner, that the opposing goalkeeper defended badly, and ended up entering the goal after a defender of them pushed it in. 2x1.
At the 45+5 minute mark, our defender André Ramalho was kicked and thrown into the ground, injured. With no substitutions left to be made, he continued on the field and went to the opposing box for the escanteio. Igor Coronado crossed the ball straight into our man Ramalho's head, who heroicly headed it into the back of the net, and stormed in joy and coringation!!!
3x1 and Corinthians is, for the third time in a row, at the semis of Copa do Brasil.
Depay got lucky enough to meet the Mother of Fiel, Tamires, one of the best female players to ever play the game. (Photo: official Corinthians Feminino divulgation)
