Ever since we went under a pretty strict lockdown sometime late March, we discovered fish burger patties. So our weekends have a memorable aroma of fish – gentle, appetising and cheerfully comforting. Weekend evenings I cook a meat or chicken curry that lasts us through the week and, so, Saturday evenings, the flat is fragrant with the spices from the broth. The mornings always begin with coffee and that really perks the day up.
Long long ago we spent some years in Malaysia and we’d hit the mall on weekends, spending time at a gym there, finishing off with the sauna and steam room. And then we’d stroll through the mall … I cherish the smells of Malaysian food that wove a magic spell over us as we walked through.
Many families have weekend routines – does yours? Do you cook up something special on a saturday?
Here is a painting of a family meal:
The title of this painting refers to the white horse which stretches its head through the open door to be fed. The scene is based on a room in the Black Boys Inn at Hurley-on-Thames, and the figures were modelled by members of the Street family, owners of the inn. The work was one of the first ‘subjects of popular character’ purchased for the Walker Art Gallery by its first curator, as he wrote, to ‘give great pleasure to the numerous visitors of the Gallery who are uninitiated in the higher forms of art’.
