World Juniors Update

To most of the world, you probably read my headline and say "World Juniors of what?" If you live in Canada, then you know what I am talking about. Boxing day holds an annual tradition of watching World Junior Hockey games. It is obvious how much more Canada cares about this tournament than anyone else. It is hosted here almost every other year. When it is hosted here the stands are nearly full. When it is hosted elsewhere you get used to seeing empty blue seats on your television set. In fact players from the London Knights (our local OHL team) probably haven't seen such small crowds all season as they have at the championship being held in Buffalo this year. Since Buffalo is literally on the border with Canada, I would bet most of the crowds have been border jumping to watch some games.

Yesterday was the Quarter Finals, and there was some great action to recap. The Czech Republic needed a shoot out to take down the Fins.

Canada Handily defeated Switzerland

Sweden won a close game vs Slovakia

And in my opinion the best game of the day was the United Stated over Russia

This game was tied until about 7:30 minutes left when the USA scored to take a one goal lead.
Russia came back strong and had a lot of pressure and some good chances including a post with only minutes remaining. The US was able to pop an empty net goal to solidify the win. This is only the 2 time in the last 14 year that Russia has not made it to the medal rounds.

I would love to see a head to head match up between the US and Canada for the gold. This is still a possibility as Canada will take on the Czech Republic on Thursday night while the US will face off against the undefeated Swedes.

Olympics are coming up soon too! Kinda sucks there won't be NHL players but of course I'll still be cheering for Canada!

It will be interesting to watch for sure.
