HODL basically means "Hold On for Dear Life. It is a term used in the Cryptocurrency community when referring to holding onto a cryptocurrency rather than selling it.
The term "HODL" originated in December 2013 on the Bitcoin Forum message board by a user who sumbitted a post with a typing error in the subject, "I AM HODLING." The rest as they say is history. Today HODL is a well known word int he Cryptocurrency community.
