The old coaching inn

We booked a weeks holiday in East Devon which was due to start Monday late afternoon. I suggested at the last minute to the Mrs that we find somewhere for the weekend as it seemed silly that we'd finished work on the Friday and was going to sit around for two days waiting to go away. I spent a few hours being messed about by Bed & Breakfast places advertising that they were Dog-Friendly when in fact what they really meant was dogs are allowed in the bar but not in the rooms! As I said to one guy "What am I supposed to do, lock him in the car overnight?" finally I came across The Blue Ball Inn which is based in Countisbury, Lynmouth, North Devon. The Blue ball is your classic old English country pub with oak beams and open fire and dates back to the 18th century. Pretty much all the guests had dogs with them but one of the main selling features for us was that they allowed dogs in the restaurant area, a massive plus in our books as we would have hated to leave Charlie in the room and he would have hated it too.

The Inn is right on the edge of Exmoor and Charlie and I went for a fantastic, if not scary, walk along the mountain. Some of the drops were that sheer I got scared and put him back on the lead because Charlie has no common sense sometimes.

The food, as you'd expect, was both homemade and generous portions. I had Chicken and Ham hock pie washed down with a pint of real ale. One interesting thing happened. Charlie is an exceptionally friendly dog, he likes to meet and greet everyone including other dogs. Now while he initially did a lot of tail wagging he soon cottoned on to what the other dogs were doing all of which were laying down and semi-dozing which left all the diners free to enjoy their meal.

Breakfast, as you'd expect was the Full English with plenty of toast, cereal, juices and hot drinks. After breakfast, I took Charlie on another walk and then it was time to check out and head over to East Devon for the main part of our holiday.

I expect you needed some long walks to work off all that food :) Good to find a dog-friendly place.

I haven't got to the cream tea's part yet. LOL
