The Market Outside is Frightful...

The holiday season is upon us! Fresh pine and eggnog, face stuffing and food comas, and lot and lots of gifts for the loved ones. You know for sure that it’s last-minute gift-buying season when crypto markets plummet 30-40%…

For asian/asian Americans, its the beginning of that money-giving season. Asian countries historically are not the packaged gift-giving type and instead, families tend to gift each other little bundles of money. Particularly older individuals will give a bit of allowance to the younger ones through these next few weeks, either for Xmas, the New Years, or the Lunar New Year. I’m sure many of you have seen those bright red envelopes in China or other variants in other countries. Cash is King and we typically don’t mess around with toys and gadgets.

There are a number of reasons for this but one that I interpret and heed the most is this idea of responsibility and agency. If you receive a physical gift, you can only use that thing in itself for whatever duration. Gift cards run our and video games eventually get old. But money comes with a couple implications, namely the idea that you should be using that money responsibility. Cash comes with a lesson that one should make adult decisions and either save up for something important or use it on something that will help you grow into the future.

A Different Ballgame

Now if you’re reading this on Steemit, you’ve most likely already subscribed to the idea that digital currency should be an integral part of our lives. So why not transition this traditional act of giving/receiving dolla-bills with QR codes and fast/immutable transactions? Here are some of the biggest reasons to gift someone crypto-

  • Throw them into the deep end. Nothing motivates you more to do something than having some hands-on experience. No one wants a bunch of “arm-chair cryptographers.” If you gift even a little bit of crypto to someone, they’ll be instantly mobilized as new curious fans. This gives them a meaningful starting point to explore the world of blockchain. If you could go back in time and tell everyone to learn a bit of code in the 90s, would you?

  • Get them earning in the right way. Crypto isn’t just a new form of money, but an opportunity to invest differently in yourself. A big part of Steemit is getting rewarded for content and curation. By gifting a bit of the right kind of crypto, you can encourage the recipient to have their hand at their own passions and continue to earn.

  • Put meaning back into money. Most of us on here on Steemit have earned a good amount of our current Steem Power through content sharing and engagement. We accumulated this meaningful crypto through our own passions and emotional investment. That means the very money we gift others has that concept embedded in the gift itself. Each Steem is a handcrafted gift that is very very different than a few green (or whatever color your national tender is) pieces of paper.

New Spending Habits?

So what do you think? Ever consider getting some crypto for your loved ones this holiday? Or maybe helping them set up a new exchange profile? Money talks after all…

Hello @hansikhouse

This is certainly informative.

Each Steem is a handcrafted gift that is very very different than a few green (or whatever color your national tender is) pieces of paper.

Surely, cryptocurrencies that worth their onions are bigger than all national currencies put together. And steem happen to be one of such currencies. Have bookmarked this page and will always checkout this informative blog. FOLLOWED.
