In 1875, the Russian engineer Pavel Yablochkov discovered the so-called "electric candle" (in which two coal plates, separated by a porcelain inset, served as a conductor of electricity that heated the arc), which served as a source of light. This invention he made in Russia, in a Moscow laboratory created at his own expense. But in his homeland, he found neither support nor understanding.
Soon, Yablochkov was in Paris, where he completed the design of the electric candle. The "electric candle" became the first electric light source. March 23, 1876 Russian electrical engineer received the French patent No. 112024 for her invention, which contains a brief description of the candle in its original forms and the image of these forms.
His offspring Yablochkov presented at an exhibition of physical instruments, held April 15, 1876 in London. On low metal pedestals, Yablochkov placed four of his candles, wrapped in asbestos and located at a great distance from each other. To the luminaries led by the wires current from the dynamo, located in the next room. Turning the handle, the current was plugged into the mains, and immediately the vast room was flooded with a very bright, slightly bluish electric light.
The success of the candle Yablochkov surpassed all expectations. The world press was full of headlines: "The invention of the Russian retired military engineer Yablochkov - a new era in technology"; "North light, Russian light is the miracle of our time"; "Russia is the birthplace of electricity", etc.
In many countries of the world, companies for the commercial exploitation of the Yablochkov candles were founded. They appeared on sale and began to disperse in huge quantities. Each candle cost about 20 cents and burned for 1.5 hours. At the end of this time, I had to insert a new one into the lamp. Subsequently, lanterns were invented with automatic replacement of candles.
In February 1877, the elegant light was illuminated by the fashionable shops of the Louvre in Paris. Twenty-two AC arc-shaped arc lamps - "Yablochkov's candles" - replaced two hundred gas horns. It was a real sensation. Then the candles of Yablochkov flared up and in the square in front of the opera house. And in May 1877, they first illuminated one of the most beautiful highways of the French capital - Avenue de l'Opera.
Soon the "Russian light" illuminated the city streets, shops and theaters of many countries. This invention marked the beginning of the practical use of electric charge for lighting purposes.
