A hacker of that caliber will use VPN 100% certain. No one can break VPN encryption to this day. Yes it is not difficult to get IP address of client communications in server systems logs, but when a hack happens, I guarantee that IP address related to serious hack is a fake IP.
They show PLC systems or O2 and other gas control machines being hacked and there was nothing they can do about? That's not true. PLC systems have manual shut down buttons, and in the worse scenario, someone can just pull a stupid plug out.
