Jesus, as Saint Matthew tells us in his gospel, not only taught a new spiritual doctrine, the doctrine of the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of God's perfections, but also announced the arrival of a new time with the action of the Holy Spirit, the spirit of wisdom and knowledge. The time of the great prophets like Isaiah or Ezekiel of the Old Testament had ended and a new organization, the communion of believers in the name of Jesus guided by the Holy Spirit, had to arise to fulfill the new promises taught in the Sermon on the Mount.
The Bible relates that John the Baptist had been imprisoned and that his end was near, and Jesus, who had already begun his public life, knew this. This is why Jesus, when speaking about John the Baptist, probably a relative of his, described him as the last of the prophets before the birth of the Church, and as the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy referring to the return of Elijah. And so, Jesus spoke of John the Baptist as the one who was to fulfill the times prophesied long ago with the conclusion of the old man subjected to sin with these words: "For before John came, all the prophets and the law of Moses looked forward to this present time" Matthew 11:13.
And Jesus taught all this to make it clear that men with the arrival of a new law should make more important decisions than those made in ancient times; the arrival of Jesus implied the conclusion of everything old to give way to the new, the grace of the spirit with the eternal life. Jesus explained that with his coming and that of John, men should strive not to comply with a rigid law composed of imperatives or orders but to enter a new spiritual realm. That is why he used the life of John as an example: "I tell you no one ever born on this earth is greater than John the Baptist. But whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John" Matthew 11:11.
The annunciation of the Kingdom of God marked a turning point in time and the arrival of a new man of whom John the Baptist bore witness.
