Prevent house fires originating from dryers

Many house fires start in the dryers, and are easily preventable!

I was a firefighter for a number of years, and was always interested on how house fires started. Many fires start in the dryer vent pipe. This is because it fills up with lint, and the lint becomes exceedingly dry and will catch on fire. These fires can be prevented with an annual inspection of your dryer exhaust pipe. In this post, I will take you through the steps of cleaning or replacing the pipe.

Tools you will need

A flat head screwdriver, a tape measure, two 4inch hose clamps (if cleaning, you may be able to reuse the old ones), a pair of snips, and new hose if replacing it.

So first thing is to remove the old hose. You may need snips to cut off a plastic clamp, or a screw driver to remove a hose clamp. KIMG1768.JPG

This is where the fires start!

This one was not bad, but defiantly required the yearly cleaning. So, to install a new pipe, you can either use a measuring tape, or align the old and new pipes to get the correct length. KIMG1776.JPG

You will need to cut the wire at the correct length with wire snips. KIMG1777.JPG
Installing the new pipe is just as easy as the removal of the old one was. KIMG1770.JPG
And if you have a newer dryer, there may be a sensor to tell you when it needs cleaning, please do not ignore this!

Nice reminder to help keep people safe at home. In addition to your good advice above, it is good to check the exhaust vent that this exhaust hose connects to. Sometimes the flappers in the vents can get stuck with things like wasp nests, leaves, etc. Check the vent while the dryer is running to ensure it is working properly.

Very true! This one was filled with bird seeds from mice.

Saftey first, good tip.

You know it! Simple things like this used to be common knowledge. The whole post depression era, people did all these kind of things on their own. Now the big company's and big brothers want to make all the money and "safeguard" their servants.
