What I discovered about myself while homeless

in homeless •  7 years ago

Due to our Landlord violating city codes my husband and I suddenly became homeless and had to live off the charity of our family and friends for 6 months. It gave me a different perspective on the life I had been taking for granted and gave me time to reasses my priorities. This time we spent without a home or car made us realize things are fleeting and we asked ourselves if we were really living or just existing. It was during this time we decided to make some changes in our life. We spent the next 18 months selling everything we owned, banking all the money we could and moved to Mexico with our dog, clothes and whatever personal belongings could fit into our Jeep.

Since being homeless different points of life have become more evident.

  1. If we are not living we are simply waiting to die.
  2. Life is exactly what you put into it.
  3. The amount of effort given equals the amount of result.
  4. Having goals gives us purpose and without purpose we feel depressed.
  5. There is no perfect way to do anything.
  6. We are all the same but different.
  7. Stuff is exactly that, stuff.
  8. I long to see more and be more.
  9. Your perception is exactly that, your perception.
  10. Everyone desires to be heard and we all need to listen more.
  11. Observe your surroundings and you will pick up so much more.
  12. Life is sweet and ugly.
  13. We are lucky if we get one person to love and what we get in return is to watch them die.
  14. Love everyone that meets you. Give that love away again and again.
  15. Life changes at the drop of a dime.

I am terribly sorry to hear that. Very true what you said. Your life can fall apart in a split second. I have been there myself. It breaks my heart to see homeless people. They all have a story. And people look at them from a very judgmental eye. But you'd be surprised to see that there's even people who have phd and bachelors degree that can end up in this exact position. No one is free from this, it could happen to anyone. We don't choose our circumstances or what happens to us, we only choose how we react to it. And the way you did is absolutely incredible. Bless you🖤 Life has a great future in store for your kind soul.

Thank you for your kind words. I was blessed to have family and friends willing to help us. The homeless epidemic is so much worse here in Mexico. We see people sleeping on cement slabs and on the side of roads. The Haitian refugees were taken into Tijuana by the mexican government and they are seen begging for money or selling packs of gum to be able to buy food.
It makes me so thankful for what I have. Blessings to you as well.

Wow this is absolutely horrible. I am sending you all the strength in the world. Your journey and positivity will inspire many. You should definetly share your life experience on here. You are the definition of what I call a warrior. Hang in there beautiful, the world is yours!🖤
